Abstracts |
Various studies focusing on the procedures for estimating fungal ergosterol from a number of ectomycorrhizas and vesicular arbuscular mycorrhizas are reviewed. The main environmental factors (i.e. year, season and horizon) affecting ergosterol production are briefly discussed. The effects of macronutrients (N, P, K, Ca, Mg and S), heavy metals and fungicides on the fungal biomass are also addressed. The simultaneous estimation of ectomycorrhizal fungal and fine root biomass and the estimation of ergosterol in organic matter and in soil are discussed. Finally, more studies conducted from different regions focusing on other sterols (e.g. cholesterol) produced by vesicular arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi are also discussed. |
