The ectomycorrhizal fungus Tuber borchii establishes mutualistic symbioses with the roots of some trees and shrub species leading to the formation of a highly specialized structure named ectomycorrhiza. An important question in relation to the physiology of ectomycorrhizal associations concerns the metabolic exchanges occurring between the two partners and the extent to which each partner contributes. Although the general features of the ectomycorrhizal interactions have been widely described, limited information are still available regarding Tuber species. Our recent studies give the first insight into some aspects of T. borchii carbohydrate and nitrogen metabolism, thus elucidating the fungal contribution to the nutritional exchanges of mycorrhiza. The activities of the enzymes mainly involved in the assimilating pathways of carbon and nitrogen compounds have been investigated and several genes have been cloned and characterized. |
