This review covers the European (Sambucus nigra) and American elderberries (S. canadensis). The botanical (taxonomy, distribution, habitat, morphology, reproductive biology and plant development), horticultural (winter hardiness, site selection and preparation, orchard establishment, fertilizer application and mycorrhizas, pruning, weed control, pests and diseases and harvesting) and propagation aspects (selection and breeding and seed and vegetative propagation) of elderberries are discussed. The folkloric, utilitarian, food, and medicinal uses and the ecological value and ornamental potential, markets and production costs and processing of elderberries are also pointed out. |
