A field experiment was conducted at the Division of Sericulture, Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agriculture Sciences and Technology of Kashmir, Mirgund, Kashmir, India, to investigate the presence of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi in rhizosphere of mulberry [Morus spp.] under temperate climatic conditions. Mulberry plants (20-25 years old) of three varieties, viz., Goshoerami, Ichinose and Kokuso-27, were selected for the study. Root colonization of all three varieties and the percentage of colonization were determined. Results showed that all three varieties were found to be mycorrhizal and the percentage of colonization varied from 24 to 40%. Average colonization percentage was recorded in Goshoerami to the extent of 37%, Ichinose had 35% and Kokusu-27 had only 28%. The AM fungi belonging to genus Glomus were observed. |
