The response of cowpea (cv. Narendra Lobia-2) to P fertilizer (0, 25, 50 or 75 kg/ha) and microbial inoculation (Rhizobium inoculated to seeds at 0.5 kg/ha, VAM [vesicular arbuscular mycorrhiza] inoculated to soil at 5 kg/a, or Rhizobium + VAM) was studied in Uttar Pradesh, India, during the summer of 2004. Among the P rates, 50 kg/ha gave the highest number of leaves per plant at 30 and 60 days after sowing or DAS (14.87 and 67.72, respectively), vine length at 30 and 60 DAS (20.91 and 139.83 cm), number of nodules per plant at 30 DAS (12.60), number of pods per plant (39.13), pod length (30.65 cm), pod diameter (0.78 cm), pod weight (10.44 g) and pod yield (90.59 quintal/ha). The inoculation of Rhizobium + VAM also resulted in the highest number of leaves at 30 and 60 DAS (14.91 and 67.12), vine length at 30 and 60 DAS (67.12 and 21.13 cm), number of nodules per plant at 30 DAS (12.54), number of pods per plant (38.59), pod length (30.73), pod diameter (0.76 cm), pod weight (9.78 g) and pod yield (87.70 quintal/ha). [1 quintal=100 kg]. |
