Endomycorrhiza can be utilized as biofertilizers in agriculture, agroforestry, coastal rehabilitation and reforestation programs to reduce major expense in using inorganic fertilizers. The problems and issues regarding the use of mycorrhiza in the Philippines are discussed. The status of research and development project (2000-2002) involving technology generation and packaging of indigenous endomycorrhizas is described. A successful protocol for reproducing Philippine endomycorrhizal species from a single isolate involved the isolation by wet-sieving and decanting procedure of spores of endomycorrhizal species, namely: Glomus, Gigaspora, Scutellospora and Acaulospora. The results of technology transfer are evaluated in terms of technical feasibility, ecophysiological effects, economic returns and institutional linkages. |
